Gary Anderson and Michael Smith shrugged off the first day nerves to record vital victories at the Grand Slam of Darts.Â
Anderson was forced to produce his best against talented BDO youngster Cameron Menzies.Â
The Grand Slam is high on Gary's wish list and he is aiming high this week in Wolverhampton, but he had to work for his 5-3 win.
After missing darts to break in the opening leg, the Scot his first maximum and then broke to leg three. He should have gone 4-1 up but missed four doubles,
Gary Anderson, James Wade and Michael Smith will fly the Team Unicorn flag at this year's Grand Slam of Darts.
Anderson and Wade have both lost Grand Slam Finals, while Smith has a decent recent record at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall.Â
The Scot is seeded 3rd and will face Australian Simon Whitlock, Dutch youngster Berry van Peer and another Scot in BDO player Cameron Menzies, who is making his debut.
Wade will face Phil Taylor, Robbie Green and BDO World Trophy winner Peter Machin, while Smith
Team Unicorn youngster Dimitri van den Bergh produced the performance of his life to reach his first big TV quarter-final.Â
The young Belgian beat Raymond van Barneveld 6-4 to set up an all Unicorn quarter-final at the World Series against James Wade.Â
Meanwhile Unicorn superstar Gary Anderson wowed the Scottish crowd, while Kyle Anderson lost out in a thriller to Rob Cross.

It is a first European Championship quarter-final for Unicorn star Michael Smith.
But he had to dig deep to finally see off Benito van de Pas in a last leg decider and he will now face Rob Cross on Sunday for a spot in the semi-finals.Â
Smith led 6-2 and 8-4 and missed match darts before getting over the line in Hasselt on Saturday night.Â

Team Unicorn star Kyle Anderson banged in a brilliant 9-darter at the European Championship.Â
But he suffered heartbreak losing his semi-final 11-10 to Michael van Gerwen after the Australian missed two match darts to win in the deciding leg!

And there was also defeat for Dimitri van den Bergh as the young Belgian was beaten 6-1 by Jonny Clayton.

Kyle Anderson has reached the European Championship quarter-finals for a second consecutive year in Hasselt.Â
The Team Unicorn star swept aside the challenge of Jelle Klaasen in style as he won 10-6 and he will now play Mensur Suljovic on Sunday afternoon.Â
"My finishing was spot on when it mattered," the Aussie said. "Every time Jelle missed I punished him and I am getting better with each game here, so there is no reason why this run shouldn't continue."
